Numerous industries have the demand to laser mark on large areas (LAM) on free form curved objects, traditionally requiring the use of robotics or 5 axis CNC machines. Even the common solutions available on the market for controlling the z-coordinate in laser processing is using the mechanical translation.

In any case, any additional mechanical translation movement in industrial operating environment requires surplus in energy consumption in the order of magnitude of multiple Megawatts of energy during its lifetime.Further, the delicate movable parts are limited in their lifetime, require lots of space to be integrated in an existing system and often need to be water cooled.

Using the tunable lens for moving the z-axis at maximum power consumption at the order of 1.5W only, is a sustainable investment. Savings in energy, on space and on mechanical parts maintenance costs can be essential driving factors, whether the tunable lenses are used for traditional laser marking or for environmental high impact applications such as laser cleaning, drilling, cutting or welding.

Therefore, Z-axis movement using Optotune tunable lenses for laser Processing, is an ideal candidate to overcome many of the downsides of a mechanical solutions while at the same time ensuring reduced costs and an environmentally friendly technology.
